Embracing Modernity: Navigating the Purpose in Urban Landscapes
As a practicing landscape architect deeply engaged with ecological design, I’ve often been asked—is it really possible to create a modern, beautiful, functional landscape using only native plants? The answer is both yes and no. Yes, in principle. But no, not without confronting some very real challenges.
In our practice, we strive to explore every design in local ecology, using plants as the backbone. Those Plant species that have evolved in specific climatic, soil, and biodiversity conditions. These plants require fewer resources, adapt better, and offer unmatched ecosystem services—from supporting pollinators and birds to restoring soil health and water cycles. And we call them Native, a term that means “to be born” or “produced by Birth “or even simpler meaning is “natural”. But turning this thought ideal into urban reality is not always straightforward.
